    Northern Song Reflections on the Tang

    NORTHERN SONG REFLECTIONS ON THE TANG Jeffrey Rice Victor Mair In the mid-eleventh century Chinese intellectuals argued about history, and left their competing narratives to us in print. They contested how history should be written, and what relevant lessons ought to be adapted to the changing society of Song 宋 (960-1279) dynasty China. They were particularly concerned with the history of the long-lasting Tang 唐 (618-907) dynasty. They revised the official history of the Tang on a variety of levels: they used primary sources differently to analyze evidence, developed a new literary language to write historical prose, employed editorial critiques differently to draw political morals by analogy to historical events, and harnessed new print technology to disseminate their views to a wider audience. This dissertation analyzes the revisions to the history of the Tang produced in the eleventh century on each of these levels: historiography, linguistics, politics, and print culture. These elements all functioned to reinvent the ancient ideal of the Confucian scholar in terms that advanced the interests of the burgeoning class of literati officials in Northern Song China

    Current-eddy interaction in the Agulhas Return Current region from the seismic oceanography perspective

    Interleaving in the Agulhas Return Current (ARC) frontal region is commonly manifested in the form of thermohaline intrusions, as sub-tropical and sub-polar water masses of similar density meet. In Jan/Feb 2012, the Naval Research Laboratory and collaborators carried out a field experiment in which seismic and traditional hydrographic observations were acquired to examine frontal zone mixing processes. The high lateral resolution (10 m) of the seismic observations allowed fine-scale lateral tracking of thermal intrusions, which were corroborated with simultaneous XBT casts. Between seismic deployments both salinity and temperature data were acquired via CTD, Underway-CTD and microstructure profiles. This study focuses on analyzing seismic reflection data in a particular E-W transect where the northward flowing ARC interacted with the southward flowing portion of a large anticyclonic eddy. Strong reflectors were most prominent at the edge of a hyperbolic zone formed between the eddy and ARC, where sub-polar waters interacted with waters of sub-tropical origin on either side. Reflectors were shallow within the hyperbolic zone and extended to 1200 m below the ARC. The nature of the observed reflectors will be determined from comparison of seismic reflection and derived ∂T/∂z fields, and XBT and TS profiles from the available hydrographic data

    Improving Biomethanation of Chicken Manure by Co-Digestion with Ethanol Plant Effluent

    As the global production of chicken manure has steadily increased, its proper management has become a challenging issue. This study examined process effluent from a bioethanol plant as a co-substrate for efficient anaerobic digestion of chicken manure. An anaerobic continuous reactor was operated in mono- and co-digestion modes by adding increasing amounts of the ethanol plant effluent (0%, 10%, and 20% (v/v) of chicken manure). Methanogenic performance improved significantly in terms of both methane production rate and yield (by up to 66% and 36%, respectively), with an increase in organic loading rate over the experimental phases. Correspondingly, the specific methanogenic activity was significantly higher in the co-digestion sludge than in the mono-digestion sludge. The reactor did not suffer any apparent process imbalance, ammonia inhibition, or nutrient limitation throughout the experiment, with the removal of volatile solids being stably maintained (56.3???58.9%). The amount of ethanol plant effluent appears to directly affect the rate of acidification, and its addition at ???20% (v/v) to chicken manure needs to be avoided to maintain a stable pH. The overall results suggest that anerobic co-digestion with ethanol plant effluent may provide a practical means for the stable treatment and valorization of chicken manure

    Revisiting an integrated approach to bean leaf beetle and bean pod mottle virus management

    This article originally appeared in the 2005 ICM newsletter. However, the significance of the bean leaf beetle and bean pod mottle virus has not diminished in recent years. There is still the potential of economic damage from either or both pests. We have recently completed a three-year study that examines the complex issues of managing these two pests, but the data are still being analyzed. We also have identified potential field tolerance to virus disease. Growers are encouraged to query seed dealers regarding tolerance of varieties to virus disease. Ultimately, this will likely be the best management tool for disease control. In the meantime, we give you our best recommendations as we understand the situation in Iowa
